TONY (2026): Editors Curt Lobb & Bobby Upchurch on Cutting the Anthony Bourdain Biopic
byScreen Love Affair

Tony, the Anthony Bourdain biopic directed by Matt Johnson, is in theaters now! We sat down with its editors, Curt Lobb and Bobby Upchurch, longtime Zapruder Films collaborators with credits including Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, Blackberry, and Operation Avalanche.

In this conversation, they break down what actually separates good editing from bad, how test screenings reshaped key scenes in Tony, the story behind that Fifth of Beethoven needle drop, and how two editors split the workload on a project this size. We also get into their favorite discoveries in the edit, underrated film recommendations, and why the theatrical experience still matters to them.

If you loved Tony or you're just curious what editors do, this one's for you!

Also, big thanks to Bobby, Curt, Brandon's mom, and the team at A24 for making this happen.
